ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that is over 2000 years old.

It forms part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which is a complete and holistic health care model.

Acupuncture involves the use of sterile, fine needles which are inserted into the skin. The treatment is usually very comfortable and can elicit a deep sense of relaxation. The acupuncture needles stimulate certain acu-points along meridians (pathways) in the body to help restore a healthy flow of ‘qi’ or life force. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, when this flow is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to loss of vitality and illness.

Depending on a patient’s presenting symptoms, constitution and TCM diagnosis, different points will be selected as part of an overall treatment plan. During a treatment, other Traditional Chinese Medicine methods such as Cupping, Moxibustion, Guasha and Chinese herbal medicine may be used according to the patient’s needs.

NB: All practitioners using the title Acupuncturist, are required to hold a 4 year Bachelor degree in Health Sciences and to be registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA).

Ongoing research is being conducted into the effects of acupuncture. A recent systematic review of the research, showed strong supporting evidence for Acupuncture’s use in certain conditions.
